From taking care of a loved one, becoming a stay-at-home parent or focusing on your education — there are many reasons why an individual may take a few years off from their careers. And while returning to the workforce can be overwhelming, the key is knowing where to start and have proper preparation.
“I definitely felt like I was out of the loop. So I was looking for a class to refresh my skills,” explained Alexandra Avalos, a local woman who found success after just a few weeks of classes.
To re-enter the workforce, keeping skills updated is essential, and taking classes can help you build new skills or perfect the ones you already have.
Avalos said she reached out to several organizations, but they all wanted to charge her. She then turned to Baker Ripley Community Services, one of a number of adult education and literacy providers Workforce Solutions partners with, that delivers services for free.
When Avalos returned to the workforce, after taking a few years off, her first step was into a classroom. She had been away from the workforce long enough that basic productivity software —such as Microsoft Word— had changed.
For Workforce Solutions, ensuring digital inclusion in our community is a must, technology shouldn’t be a barrier when re-entering the workforce. “That just prepared me so that, if needed, I could do any task they ask me to do,” Avalos said to Your Career, Your Choice correspondent Jim Adams.
