To better understand how this process works, we spoke with Jo Ikard from the Texas Veterans Commission, who shared how veterans can successfully translate their military experience into meaningful civilian careers.
Some military roles are highly specialized, making it difficult for veterans to see how their experience applies outside of service. For example, someone who operated a tank or served in a technical military role may wonder how those skills connect to civilian opportunities. According to Ikard, this is where guidance from veteran career advisors becomes essential.
Veterans can meet with career advisors at Workforce Solutions offices across Texas, where they receive personalized guidance. Advisors begin by learning about each veteran’s goals and reviewing their military experience. From there, they help translate military responsibilities into civilian language that employers understand.
For example, a veteran responsible for maintaining operational safety in the military may be well suited for roles such as safety manager or safety coordinator in industries like manufacturing, construction, or logistics. What may have once involved ensuring safety in a military environment can translate into workplace safety, risk management, and compliance roles in the civilian workforce.
This translation process also includes identifying career pathways and evaluating the labor market. Advisors help veterans determine whether they already have the skills needed or if additional training or education could help them reach their goals. In some cases, short-term training programs or certifications can make the transition even smoother.
Military leadership experience also translates well into civilian management roles. Many military positions align closely with workplace responsibilities, such as the following:
- Commander → Senior Manager
- Company Grade Officer → Operations Manager
- First Sergeant → Personnel Manager
- Warrant Officer → Technical Manager
- Squad Leader → Team Leader
Even day-to-day military duties often mirror civilian workplace skills. For example:
- Military description: “Served as platoon sergeant for alpha battery.”
Civilian translation: Successfully supervised and trained a 35-member team on organizational tasks. - Military description: “Led 12-person team through four successful missions.”
Civilian translation: Managed a 12-person team in a fast-paced environment while meeting organizational goals.
