What Is Texas Rising Star?
Texas Rising Star is a quality certification program for childcare providers. Providers can work through three levels of certification, from two to four stars, as they meet or exceed program standards.
The certification looks at several areas of childcare quality, including:
- Director and staff qualifications and training
- Indoor and outdoor learning and play environments
- Interactions between children and teachers
As providers move up through the star levels, they can receive additional benefits, including higher reimbursement rates.
Supporting Providers and Families
For childcare providers, reaching Texas Rising Star certification can require a significant investment of time and effort.
Mary Brewster, a Pearland childcare provider who has worked in the industry since the late 1990s, described the process as challenging but worthwhile.
“It was hard work, a lot of sleepless nights, but it’s well worth it because at the end my daycare would benefit from it.”
Brewster also highlighted the financial support available through the program. Providers serving children who receive Workforce Solutions childcare assistance may receive higher reimbursement depending on their certification level. She also noted that providers can receive help with improvements such as playground equipment.
What the Rating Means for Parents
For parents, the certification provides information about the environment their children will experience.
Dr. Melanie Johnson of Collaborative for Children explained that choosing a Texas Rising Star-rated provider means children are in a high-quality environment where teachers have received training and learning environments support children’s development.
