The recent in-person job fair at San Jacinto College’s north campus, located at 5800 Uvalde Rd, Houston, TX 77049, successfully showcased career opportunities in the transportation sector. Workforce Solutions offered scholarships to help individuals enter high-skill, high-growth transportation programs designed to prepare participants for various roles within the industry.
Texas Southern University (TSU) was among the programs highlighted at the event, providing hands-on learning and internship opportunities. Student Olivia Bivins shared her positive experience with the program, emphasizing its practical approach and strong career preparation.
“It’s really hands-on,” Bivins explained. “There are opportunities for students to get involved in internships. It’s very open, the career opportunities are there.”
Despite recent trade talks raising concerns about tariffs potentially increasing shipping costs, Texas A&M economist Jorge Barro noted that job growth in the transportation sector remains steady. Students interested in pursuing careers in port management, aviation, and related fields have a variety of options to consider.
Transportation jobs offer competitive pay and unique benefits, according to TSU professor Robert Morgan. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that supply chain coordinators earn an average salary of $80,000. Morgan also highlighted that a career in transportation can include travel and diverse experiences.
For those who were unable to attend the job fair, ABC13 streamed a live session featuring industry experts discussing how to break into transportation careers, providing valuable insights for those interested in the field.
