As we reflect back on 2022, the Disability Employment Symposium stands out as a powerful moment of connection and progress—bringing together individuals with different abilities, employers, and advocates to focus on inclusive hiring, access to resources, and meaningful employment opportunities.
“This is just an awesome event to share community resources,” said Torrance Douglas, Senior Recruiting Manager with University Career Services of the University of Houston. “Along with our co-organizers Workforce Solutions, we’re here to highlight employers who are strategic in recruiting.”
The event focused particularly on engaging employers and community organizations who are intentional about hiring individuals with disabilities. It was also held in celebration of a month dedicated to disability awareness, underscoring the importance of accessible career opportunities for all.
Kaden K. from the City of Houston Human Resources Department shared their enthusiasm about the experience saying “Basically, we’re here to meet people and educate them on how the City of Houston processes employment. Today was awesome, from the get-go. We enjoyed meeting other employers, networking, and answering questions from attendees.” She also noted the strong relationship between the City and Workforce Solutions as a key factor in their participation.
Another important participant was William Garcia from the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, who echoed those positive sentiments: “It was a very well-organized event,” he said. “We appreciated the breakfast and lunch and collected a few great resumes. I’m looking forward to setting up interviews with some of the candidates we met today.”
Attendees included students, alumni, and community members, making for a diverse and engaged audience. “It’s just been an awesome turnout so far,” said Douglas. “This is one of many relationship-building opportunities we have with Workforce Solutions. We’re happy about the event and the overall purpose of it. Mission completed.”
