Mike Webster has spent much of his career working at the intersection of education and workforce development. As president of Houston City College Southwest, he brings 10 years of experience at HCC, along with a long history with HISD and workforce development. He also knows the Gulf Coast Workforce Board from the inside, having previously worked on the Board’s staff.
That experience gives Webster a unique connection to the Board and its role in the region. He sees significant opportunity ahead for Houston and believes the Board is in a position to help connect people with it.
“I love it. I mean, so this board has so much opportunity to impact the city.”
Webster points to the range of industries driving the region, from the Texas Medical Center and Port Houston to refineries and growing technology and manufacturing operations. For him, Houston’s continued growth means continued opportunities for the people who live and work here.
“We’re still booming. We continue to boom.”
His background in education and workforce development gives him a clear view of how those opportunities can connect with Houstonians. Having previously worked for the workforce board and now leading Houston City College Southwest, Webster has seen the workforce system from different perspectives.
Outside of work, Webster stays busy. He is an avid jogger and has completed five marathons, with hopes of running another one in January. He is also a book collector and is currently searching for a copy of Limbo Tower by William Gresham.
For Webster, serving on the Gulf Coast Workforce Board brings together several parts of his career: education, workforce development and a longstanding connection to the Houston community. As the region continues to grow, he sees the Board as an important place to help connect Houstonians with the opportunities around them.
