On Monday, October 20, over 750 people gathered in the streets of Houston to celebrate White Cane Safety Day, an event dedicated to promote the independence and the achievements of individuals with vision loss and blindness.
Since 2007, White Cane Safety Day has been celebrated in Houston, underscoring the community’s commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and empowerment for people with disabilities, while educating the public about the contributions and capabilities of individuals who rely on it.
On this occasion, it was held at the University of Houston, welcoming walk-ins.
The event featured a joint address by Susan Lindsey, Regional Director of the Texas Workforce Commission Vocational Rehabilitation Services (TWS-VRS), and Juliet Stipeche, Executive Director of the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, emphasizing the importance of workforce inclusion for individuals with disabilities.
“A person with disabilities provides a unique set of skills and experiences to be able to empower local economies and businesses as well,” said Stipeche, highlighting the impact of employment opportunities tailored for people with disabilities.
The event also honored partnerships with Miradela, Jersey Mike’s, University of Houston, and Impac, recognizing organizations that have gone above and beyond in creating inclusive workplaces and supporting community initiatives. Attendees had the opportunity to explore resources from 46 exhibitors, providing information on jobs, training, and support services.
In addition, Workforce Solutions’ “Workforce on Wheels” brought services and staff support directly to participants.
