Paul Puente has dedicated his life to building more than just structures, he’s committed to building futures. As the Executive Secretary for the Houston Gulf Coast Building and Construction Trades Council, Puente represents 23 different construction unions across a 20-county region that surrounds Harris County. His leadership supports a wide network of registered apprenticeship programs that provide career training at no cost to students.
“We have 13 registered apprenticeship programs that educate young men and women in the industry and construction,” Puente explained. These programs are more than just training pipelines, they are life-changing opportunities. For Puente, the work is deeply personal.
“My selfless interest is the fact that I get to help the community that I grew up in,” he said. “To help individuals get into the middle class and beyond is essentially my goal in life.”
Puente’s work intersects closely with the mission of Workforce Solutions, which aims to connect people with meaningful employment and career development opportunities across the region. Together, efforts like registered apprenticeships and regional workforce planning create a clear path for economic mobility, particularly in historically underserved communities. Puente emphasized that supporting leadership, like that of Executive Director Julie F. Stape, has been key to making progress. “She’s doing a fantastic job and I think she is listening to the board members… having someone who’s allowing us to speak our mind and creating a space for us to move forward… is exactly what we need.”
Outside of work, Puente keeps grounded by spending time with his family. “I got kids and grandkids,” he shared, adding with a smile, “I really enjoy fishing… and working on my tan.” It’s a simple pleasure that reflects a deeper satisfaction, one earned through years of helping others build better lives.
