For Seana, a summer job at Walgreens has been about more than showing up for work. Through the Workforce Solutions Gulf Coast’s Summer Earn & Learn (S.E.A.L.) Work Experience program, she has been building workplace skills, learning from her coworkers, and gaining confidence in what she can accomplish.
When asked what she likes most about coming to work, Seana gave a simple answer with a sense of humor: “Not sleeping, of course.”
But behind that lighthearted response is a student who is taking her work seriously. Her coach said one of the things that has stood out most is Seana’s willingness to learn.
“She comes to work every day with a positive attitude, positive mindset,” her coach said.
Learning by Asking Questions
At Walgreens, Seana has been working alongside employees and learning the responsibilities of the job. Her coach said she has been respectful toward her job coach and other employees and is not afraid to ask questions when she does not know something.
That willingness to ask questions has been an important part of her experience. Her coach also praised Seana for arriving on time, showing up consistently and giving her best effort at work.
Her Hard Work Is Being Recognized
Seana’s efforts have also caught the attention of the Walgreens team. During her first week, one of the store managers praised her work, including her efforts checking shelves and contributing positively to the store.
For Seana’s coach, hearing that feedback was an important moment.
“It’s just to know that her hard work isn’t going unnoticed,” the coach said.
That recognition gave Seana another reminder that the work she is putting in matters.
A Message for Other Students
When asked what she would tell another student considering joining the SEAL program, Seana kept her advice simple: “Good luck, and be positive about your work.”
Her experience shows how a first work opportunity can give students a chance to practice skills that extend beyond their daily tasks. Being on time, asking questions, staying positive and working respectfully with others are all part of learning how to navigate a workplace.
And Seana has one more person she wants to thank for believing in her.
“Mom, thank you for the work I have. It’s awesome.”
Through SEAL, Seana is gaining hands-on experience at Walgreens while continuing to learn, grow, and discover what she can bring to the workplace.
