For veterans and members of the military community, the skills gained through service can open doors to new career opportunities. Ahead of Veterans Day, Workforce Solutions Gulf Coast is joining the Texas Workforce Commission for Hiring Red, White & You!, a statewide hiring event created to connect veterans with employers and job opportunities.

Crosby Brito, Manager of Employer Engagement with the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, said the event is held statewide each year as a way to honor veterans while connecting them with employers.

“Every year for Veterans Day, Workforce Solutions on behalf of the Texas Workforce Commission hosts Hiring Red, White and You,” Brito said. “We honor our veterans and we provide them with unique job opportunities.”

Skills From Service Can Lead to New Opportunities

For Lawrence Balu, Supervisor at Gulf Copper Davie and a Marine Corps veteran, the event is an opportunity to encourage veterans to consider careers where their military experience and technical skills can transfer directly into civilian work.

Gulf Copper Davie is hiring for a range of positions, including shipfitting, pipe fitting and welding. Balu also pointed to opportunities in robotics, electrical work, painting and carpentry.

“Some of the Navy people that are on ships, they work on the ships all day while they’re in service,” Balu said. “We’d love to have them bring it over here.”

Balu also emphasized that the opportunities are open to women veterans as well, encouraging them to explore the positions available.

A Chance to Connect With Employers

Hiring Red, White & You! brings veterans and employers together in one place, creating an opportunity for job seekers to talk directly with companies about their experience, skills and career interests.

For veterans preparing to attend, bringing copies of a résumé and being ready to discuss the skills developed during military service can help make the most of conversations with employers.

Juliet Stipeche, Executive Director of the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, encouraged veterans to take part in the event and connect with the resources available through Workforce Solutions.

“Make sure that you join us at Hiring Red, White and You,” Stipeche said.

Continue Your Career After Service

The transition from military service to civilian employment can bring new questions about where existing skills fit in the workforce. Hiring Red, White & You! gives veterans an opportunity to explore those possibilities while connecting with employers looking for skilled workers.

As Balu put it, veterans have already served their country. The next step can be finding an employer where those skills can continue to be put to work.
