In today’s job market, digital skills are more important than ever. From searching for jobs online to completing applications, technology plays a major role in how people find and maintain employment. Workforce Solutions and its community partners provide digital literacy programs that are tailored to the needs of learners who want to improve these abilities.
With support from Workforce Solutions, you can take control of your job search from day one. From personalized assistance to easy-to-use online tools, Your Career, Your Choice, powered by Workforce Solutions, guides you through each step toward achieving your career goals.
Ernest Lewis, President and CEO of the Adult Education Center and a member of the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, says digital literacy starts with the basics.
“Basic digital literacy is being computer literate,” Lewis explained, including learning how to “maneuver through the internet,” search for jobs and complete online applications. He added that digital skills are “very important for individuals to sustain employment and obtain it.”
For those who may feel hesitant about taking classes, Lewis encourages individuals to take the first step and explore available resources.
“Really just jump in,” he said, while also recommending people research local options such as libraries, Workforce Solutions offices, and nonprofit organizations that offer digital literacy training.
These programs are designed to be flexible and accessible. According to Lewis, the training is “self-paced” and tailored to each participant’s needs — whether someone is learning how to operate a computer for the first time or building skills while working toward a GED or vocational training.
Digital literacy classes are available through:
- Workforce Solutions Career Offices
- Local libraries
- Local nonprofit organizations
Lewis also noted that accessibility is a key part of these programs, encouraging individuals to find options close to home or work. Workforce Solutions offices can provide referrals, and additional resources may also be found by contacting United Way’s 211 helpline.
