Observed each year on October 15, White Cane Safety Day recognizes the independence of people who are blind or have low vision and raises awareness about safe, accessible travel. The day is also an opportunity to consider how accessibility affects people beyond public spaces, including their ability to find jobs and succeed at work.
A white cane helps people with vision loss navigate their surroundings, detect obstacles, and travel independently. Drivers and pedestrians can help support that independence by respecting the right of way, keeping sidewalks and pathways clear, and asking before offering assistance.
Accessibility Matters in the Workplace
For people with disabilities, access to employment can depend in part on whether a workplace can address barriers that affect how someone performs a job. Some solutions may be simpler than employers expect.
In a recent episode of the Workforce Solutions podcast, Juliet Stipeche, executive director of the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, spoke with Fernando Rivera Jr. of the Texas Workforce Commission Vocational Rehabilitation Services program about workplace accommodations and common employer misconceptions.
Rivera explained that accommodations do not always require major changes or significant expense. For example, adjusting lighting may help an employee who is sensitive to bright lights. In a noisy call center, a headset may help an employee concentrate.
These adjustments can address specific barriers while allowing employees to meet the expectations of their positions. Rivera also discussed how assumptions about disability and accommodations can cause employers to overlook qualified candidates.
Rethinking Workplace Accommodations
White Cane Safety Day is a reminder that accessibility supports independence in everyday life. Rivera’s conversation offers employers practical examples of how they can apply that thinking in the workplace, reconsider misconceptions about disability, and recognize qualified candidates they may otherwise overlook.
