As graduation season approaches, many students are preparing to take the next step into the workforce. During a recent interview with Univision Houston, Dr. Maria Franco Cortes, Senior Planner of Board Relations and Government Affairs for Workforce Solutions, shared practical advice for college and high school graduates entering today’s competitive job market.

Dr. Franco Cortes highlighted that Workforce Solutions offers free employment services across three counties in the Gulf Coast region, helping job seekers prepare resumes, practice interview skills, attend job fairs, and connect directly with employers.

“One of the most important things graduates need to know is that they are not alone,” she said. “There are resources available, and Workforce Solutions is here to help.”

She also addressed one of the most common mistakes new graduates make: waiting until after graduation to begin their job search. Instead, she encouraged students to start exploring opportunities months before receiving their diploma.

“Many opportunities come while students are still in school,” she explained. “Even if the first job is not the dream job, it can be the first step toward building a long-term career.”

According to Dr. Franco Cortes, employers are looking for more than academic credentials. She identified four key skills that can help applicants stand out: communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability.

“In today’s market, candidates need to ask themselves what makes them different,” she said. “Human interaction still matters, which is why job fairs remain such an important tool.”

She also encouraged young people to consider apprenticeship programs, especially those who may not want to pursue a traditional college path. During National Apprenticeship Week, she noted that apprenticeships provide hands-on training, shorter educational pathways, and the opportunity to earn income while learning valuable skills.

For local job seekers, Workforce Solutions offers access to more than 13 offices in Harris County, where individuals can receive personalized guidance and support. Residents can also visit the organization’s website to find the nearest office by ZIP code, make appointments, and learn about upcoming hiring events.

Whether you are a soon-to-be graduate or ready for a career change, Workforce Solutions continues to connect the community with free resources designed to help people find jobs and build successful careers.
